Possible Teaching Activities
  • Play Secret Signaller (same activity as last lesson but with different volunteers).
Secret Signaller Activity
  • Show the Degas picture. Match sentence cards (see adjacent)
Print out and match up the pictures and the phrases.
  • Use Beach pictures ppt (see adjacent)
  • Give pairs of children a picture or postcard of a beach scene.
  • Children use their 'match' sentence cards (from previous activity) or writing frames ppt
as a model to write some sentences to describe their beach.
  • Invite pairs to write one of their sentences on the board and read it aloud.

A series of beach pictures for children to use to start their own descriptions.

Writing frames to print or display on board to support children when writing descriptions of own beach pictures.
  • Make a display of the postcards and sentences.

  • Use ppt '3a extended sentences' (see adjacent) to explore adjectives and position.
A ppt to introduce the idea of manipulating nouns and adjectives within a core sentence structure.
  • Write a simple sentence on board and encourage children to try to extend it by adding adjectives and/or connectives.

  • Repeat with more sentences, and the class read these aloud.

  • Extension: Children draw their own beach scene and write sentences to describe it. This can be done on the computer.
